My Goth Stepmom｜My Goth Stepmom's Secret

Adrian found the portrait while making room for his stepmother's records. The woman in the frame wore Celia's black dress and the same small silver ring. The date on the back was 1894. When he carried it downstairs, the hall clock began moving backward. Celia did not ask where he had found it. She asked how many minutes the clock had lost. Adrian was thirty and had spent most of his life being told that family history was none of his business. This time he set the portrait on the dinner table and waited. Celia removed her ring. Inside its band was a name that matched the signature on the canvas. The portrait passed between women who married into the family, she explained. Each new owner began resembling its subject. Each midnight the clock reclaimed another minute from her memories. Celia had planned to burn it, but the last woman who tried had forgotten her own daughter. She had stayed because she needed someone outside the tradition to remember her as she was. Adrian fetched a blank canvas. They spent the night painting each other badly, laughing at crooked noses while the clock reversed behind them. At midnight he replaced the old portrait with his awkward painting of Celia, headphones around her neck, flour on one sleeve. The clock stopped. The old canvas became an empty frame. The tradition had survived by making every woman into the same woman. Adrian hung his picture where everyone entering the house would see that this one had a name.
