Lin is thirty-six and Wei is thirty-eight, the two adults who live in this apartment. The living-room lamp is still on and the news is still playing because they chose that background, not because anyone forgot a switch. The neighbor knocks because they sent a message at dusk: leave the parcel on the mat, there is no need to come in tonight. A finger on the mouth is their agreed cue to let the door wait. It is not a way to hide the hour from anyone inside or outside.

She leaves a faint mark on the sofa arm because she is holding on, and because she can let go at any moment. Before dinner they said the rules out loud. The news may keep talking. The lamp may stay bright. The door may go unanswered for the length of this two-minute clip. If either of them says stop, they stop, and Wei will open the door and finish the conversation. Both said yes. No third person is folded into the quiet.

Every beat sits inside two minutes. At 0:15 the anchor is still talking and she looks at his eyes until she hears that he wants this. At 0:40 the knock arrives, her finger lands, and he nods: this quiet is what he wants. At 1:10 she laughs and asks whether they should answer now. He says not yet. He wants to finish this minute. At 1:35 the knocking stops. She lets go and says they can stop, or they can come closer. At the end she lowers the volume one step. The lamp stays bright.

After the knocking ends they do not chase the neighbor. Lin mutes the news and asks whether Wei would want the lamp left bright. Wei says he would, and he also says that if the parcel is fragile he will go downstairs now, so this minute can stop. They keep the scene inside about two minutes. The faint mark on the sofa is still there after she lets go. No third person is written into the quiet. Later they open the door. The hall is empty, and she says yes to leaving the parcel until morning.
