Night-call diary | She slips the ring into her bag before the door

Story notes: the ring goes in the bag because they agreed

An is thirty-three and her husband Guo is thirty-five. Tonight’s hotel is their own booked night. Before she opens the door she slips the ring into her bag because they agreed that metal should stay off the skin, so it will not scratch either of them during the hour. The ring clicks once. Guo hears it from inside. That click is their agreed hello. He does not ask how she got there, because the route, the room number, and the time were reserved by both of them. The heels are not fully off when she asks if she may kiss below the collarbone. He says yes.

The entry light is warm. After they come in, they set a small camera beside the dresser together and An starts it. She says she will decide when to stop, and he may say stop first. Guo says he wants the kiss at the collarbone in the frame and he does not want the ring in the frame, so the bag is exactly what he asked for. Both are sober. This is not a night that leaves a spouse outside the facts. The person inside the door is her husband, and he said yes first.

At 0:15 the ring clicks in the bag and Guo opens the door. At 0:40 she asks about the kiss and he nods. At 1:10 the shoes finally come off. She laughs and says they can stop here. He says he wants to come closer. At 1:35 she looks at the camera beside the dresser and asks if he still wants to be recorded. He says he does, through the two minutes. At the end she stops the recording, takes the ring out of the bag, and puts it back on while both of them watch.

Once the ring is back on her hand, An asks whether Guo would want the camera left beside the dresser. Guo says he would not. He wants her to put it away, and this is a fine moment to stop. Both of them watch the metal return to her finger. The entry light is still warm. They treat the two-minute cut as the piece from just after the door opened. They do not schedule a longer night from the duration printed on the card. The heels are lined up and the bag is closed. She says yes to going home together.
