She puts a finger on my mouth: don’t make a sound.
Fictional adult short. All characters are adults. The TV is still on. She locks the door. Wine on the collarbone. “He’s still toasting.”
Story notes: the quiet is a rule all three wrote
Qiao is thirty-two, her husband Liang is thirty-four, and Liang’s brother Chen is thirty. All three are adults, and none of them is under twenty-five. The old house is hosting a dinner for adults. Everyone toasting in the hall is a peer they invited. The side room belongs to Qiao and Chen because they wrote it down last week: Liang stays in the hall and keeps toasting. He knows, and he said yes. A finger on the mouth is their agreed cue to keep this minute soft. It does not leave Liang or the guests outside the facts.
The living-room television is still bright. There is a trace of wine on a collarbone because Qiao dabbed it there. She is not past the point of standing straight. Before she latches the side door she looks back at Liang, and Liang lifts his glass to show he is still inside the rules. Chen says he wants this minute of quiet, and he says that if either Qiao or Liang opens the door, they stop. Another line on the paper says that if a guest asks about the side room, Liang will say it is booked private time, not an accident in an empty room.
At 0:20 the latch closes and she waits until Chen says yes. At 0:50 her finger settles. The toast on the television is still going, and she asks if this is what he wants. At 1:15 she wipes a little of the wine away and says they can stop. Chen says he wants to stay until the next glass. At 1:40 Liang knocks twice, the pattern they agreed, which means all is still well. He is not there to break in. At the end the three of them touch shoulders at the door, and Qiao closes the clip.
After the shoulders touch, Liang sets his glass down and asks whether the side room should keep one more minute. Qiao says they can stop. Chen says he would want to stop on the two knocks as well. The paper is still on the table, and all three can read the line: if a guest asks, say this is booked private time. The toasts in the hall continue, and every guest is an adult they invited. Nobody stretches this clip into a longer night. The beats end at about two minutes, and Qiao says yes to opening the door.
